This Week’s Finds

Another busy week has come and gone, and with it we’ve had much needed rain, which made our thirsty plants quite happy. Sadly, a thunderstorm earlier this week felled one of our larger trees, blocking our street and requiring several police cars and a late night intervention from the town’s tree removal department to clear away. Losing a tree that’s probably been here for decades made me sad but there was nothing we could do to save it. Thankfully, the damage was minimal and no one got hurt.

The skies cleared up on Saturday when I managed to snap this on my neighborhood walk

After Tuesday’s tree incident, things started looking up. Following an unusually hot (and fun) summer, a considerable drop in temperature made everything fresh and crisp again, and made us all reach for our Fall gear. Although this has not been my favorite week, or month, we’re past the Fall equinox and it’s officially the season of hot soups, warm blankets and cozy fires, and that’s always exciting… Hopefully your week has been a little less eventful and you’re enjoying a relaxing weekend so far, pursuing hobbies and fun activities of your own. Some of you have expressed an interest on Instagram in seeing more details of our family room beams (thank you!), and I was hoping to oblige this week, but painting took longer than expected so that must wait a little longer. In the meantime, here are a few articles and items that have caught my eye that I thought you might be interested in checking out as well:

This colorful and inviting room has been on my mood boards for years and it was a pleasant surprise to see it as a room inside King Charles’s Sixteen-Century House in Cornwall:

    Eva,
Mother Nature gave us a taste of autumn early last week. Now we are expected to get into the mid-eighties by mid-week. Ugh.
I wonder, will King Charles III be allowed to visit or stay at some of his former homes now that he’s king?
I watched all of the seasons of the Durrells, including the documentary on each of the Durrells. It was all very entertaining.
I hope you have a lovely upcoming week.

Sorry to hear that, Karen… Although temps in the mid-eighties sound heavenly to this New Englander 🙂
Hope you have a great week!

So sorry to hear about the tree, Eva. However, trees that fall during storms are most probably diseased, and would have gone sooner or later. We had a couple of trees fall during hurricanes, and miraculously, none fell on the house. One of my neighbors was not so lucky, and had to move out for almost a year while the damage was fixed. Let’s hope that we aren’t in for more serious storms this fall!

I have a full collection of Tasha Tudor books, accumulated over many years. I still enjoy getting them out and looking through them. She is so quintessentially New England and the two books you have in your basket are lovely.

Oh, I love Tasha Tudor, who was so unapologetically herself. On the Durrells series, would you say it’s family friendly? I have elementary aged kids, so I was wondering. I’ve never heard of this series but am interested. Thank you for sharing.

Hi, Sheena! Happy to hear you’re a fellow Tasha Tudor admirer… About the Durrells – sadly the series is not family friendly, or at least not suited for young children (high-schoolers, maybe). We watch it in the evenings after our daughter goes to sleep. ( I know it’s great because I usually make it through an entire episode without falling asleep 🙂 )

Thanks for letting me know, Eva. Watching a whole episode without falling asleep is a very good sign. Thank you for sharing!
