Sitting Pretty

Happy December, dear friends! I hope you’re well. As always, I miss our chats and meant to make this entry a while ago, but it’s taken me longer than usual to quiet the noise of life and find a peaceful, uninterrupted moment to write things up and share a pretty chair I’ve been working on. That being said, if you love a good furniture makeover, or enjoy reading about other people’s upholstery projects, then today’s post is for you.

As you may have noticed from previous posts, upholstery has become somewhat of a hobby for me. What started out as a practical (and frugal) attempt to fix our dining chairs, has evolved into a fascinating learning experience. I love that there is an algorithm to every piece, order and method in the upholstery process, but then there is also room for artistic expression, experimentation and playfulness, all with a tangible (and often surprising) end result.

Such was the case with this little chair I want to share with you today. It sat unused in our basement for a couple of years and I had no idea what to do with it. It was sturdy, with a  beautiful shape and good proportions (which is often the case with old furniture), but the fabric was old, dusty and worn, and the seat flat and uncomfortable. Something had to be done 🙂

Over the course of several weeks and many stollen hours, I took it apart, bit by bit, then panicked at the thought of putting it all back together. The process was trickier than I expected it to be, and I thought about giving up daily but, somehow, I powered through, and it is now finished.

Like with many of my upholstery projects, it is not perfect. I made some mistakes, especially around the arms, but overall the end result exceeded my expectations. Aside from the P. Kaufmann fabric, which was a leftover piece from a previous project, the chair has now a more comfortable seat and a tight back. The skirt was a bit of a gamble, but I love the softer, more feminine look. What do you guys think?

Thanks for stopping by! I’ll be back soon with more updates on the home front.

Take care!

I think it’s just fabulous!!! Kudos to you for your patience in learning how to upholster. I love the fabric!
I just finished a simple drop-in bench seat, which seemed easy. But was more difficult than I thought at first, so I can appreciate all the work that goes into it.
So nice to see your post in my inbox–Merry Christmas!
