Q&A with Lynn Morgan

I have been an admirer of Lynn Morgan’s work ever since I first laid eyes on a project she had published in House Beautiful magazine, in their April 2009 issue. I have studied her portfolio countless times since and over the years a lot has been written about her fabulous rooms. Today we will explore some of her iconic interiors as well as more recent projects from her portfolio. In addition, I am delighted to welcome Lynn for a Q&A!

Lynn Morgan certainly needs no introduction from my part but I will give her one anyway. She is an award-winning designer based in the coastal town of Rowayton, Connecticut. With over 25 years of experience in the world of design, her philosophy for decorating is a clean, crisp, fresh look with an infusion of color. Lynn and her team have been working on projects in New York, Connecticut and vacation properties in Nantucket, Martha’s’ Vineyard, Palm Beach, and the Rockies. Recent projects include a tranquil retreat in Palmetto Bluff, a historic home in Savannah, a colorful family home in New Canaan, and a coastal summer escape in Little Compton. In the world of commercial design, Lynn Morgan has worked on the interiors of two restaurants, one in Greenwich and one in Westport. When she’s not decorating, Lynn enjoys traveling and seeking design inspiration with her husband Jeff, and relaxing in her hometown of Savannah. Welcome Lynn!

Please tell us a little bit about yourself, how did you begin your career and evolve into the design powerhouse you are today?

I worked at Condé Nast as a Decorating Editor for House and Garden magazine which I loved.  I then switched careers to decorating.

When did you first realize that interior design is the right career for you?

As a child I loved doing my bedroom over with my mom.  I loved decorating from a very young age.

How would you describe your design aesthetic?

Clean, simple crisp lines with modern touches and pops of color

Has being a Savannah native influence your style? In what way?

Yes – growing up in a town with beautiful architecture and a respect for history inspired me.

What is your starting point in working with a new client? Where do you find inspiration?

To have an initial meeting to review the client’s needs and priorities, and what is important to them.  I take lots of notes and listen.

I find inspiration everywhere, from travel to magazines to design books.

What are in your opinion the key elements of a well- designed
environment?

Proportion, scale, balance, and light.

Do you have a favorite project, past or current?

It’s hard to pick just one project, but many of my favorites are coastal homes.  I love a project in Rowayton CT that we call the “Oyster House”

Do you have a favorite room in your home?

My living room in Savannah.

Do you have any advice for designers starting out?

Stay true to your style but also be a good listener.  You have to be a good business person as well as a designer.

If you were to pick one single trait that has been essential to your success in the interior design world, what would that be?

Being a good listener.

What is the most rewarding aspect of working on residential projects? And the most challenging?

The most rewarding is when the client loves the outcome.  The most challenging is when someone can’t make up their mind.

Design mantra: Keep it simple.

Favorite place to shop for your home: I shop everywhere, I love antique stores in Savannah and Palm Beach.

Favorite home scent:Jo Malone Citrus Cologne Lime Basil & Mandarine Cologne
