Have you ever had a fixation with one particular item you just couldn’t resist buying, over and over again? Seascapes, shells, oil landscapes, books, jewelry, records, botanicals, stamps, board games, or perhaps Manolo Blahniks? Sadly I have such a fixation, and it’s getting out of hand 🙂 It’s not jewelry or expensive shoes (though I love those things, too) – it’s comfortable chairs. Old chairs, new chairs, wooden chairs, bistro chairs, armchairs, antique chairs (my favorite), quirky chairs, free chairs, expensive chairs – I love them all. A well-made and beautiful chair is so hard to come by, and even harder for me to resist it when it does. In fact, this week alone I have found not one, not two, but five chairs. Five!!! This brings the total of chairs we’ve gotten this summer to seven, and we’re running out of places to put them!!! Please send help.
In my defense, three were serendipitous, side-of-the-road finds (i.e gorgeous and free): a pair of outdoor chairs my neighbor and friend was giving away; and an old (maybe even antique) wooden chair with a woven rush seat that had been left at the curb. We were on our way to a dinner party when I saw it and yelled “stop the car!”. It didn’t fit in the trunk so I woke up at 5am the next morning (I didn’t want someone else to grab it, LOL), sneaked out and got it. The chair (pictured above) needs a bit of TLC but it truly is a knockout, isn’t it?
Midweek I also found a pair of upholstered armchairs on Facebook Marketplace and we’re having them delivered tomorrow. I’m not gonna jinx the purchase by showing them to you before they get delivered, but if you’re curious, I’ll post some pictures tomorrow after we get them 🙂 Did anything remotely similar ever happen to you? Is there some object / group of objects you love collecting and can’t resist? I’d love to hear all about it!!!
Anyway, thanks for listening! Wishing you a great weekend.
UPDATE: The chairs have arrived & here they are. They could use a good cleaning / new upholstery – but they are incredibly comfortable!!!
Oh, wow, love that side-of-the-road find!! It has so much character.
Yes! I am a chair lover, too. Have fun with it!
Oh, Eva! Join the Club! I, too, love chairs, Windsors, Hitchcocks, little French chairs, Wing backs, very hard for me to pass by a chair that has good lines. Maybe we could change them out like pillows?! Happy chair shopping!
I have a weakness for chairs as well. The side of the road finds are my favorites
I want to live in your neighborhood. ☺️ Great finds!
I am with Barb- I want to live in your neighborhood! That chair is so wonderful! I have to admit, though, my crazy thing is little side tables and old little benches. Happy Treasure Hunting!
I have a problem with chairs, lamps and original art. I do NOT live in a large house and hiding/incorporating my new treasures without drawing too much attention form my family is HARD. I have 6 lamps in my living room and 5 in my master bedroom. I will stick a chair in almost any corner or next to my table in the foyer and I swear they are all useful. I have too much art but I love a good gallery wall so that absorbs a lot of pieces.
I could not resist a beautiful antique chair with new upholstery at my local thrift shop…it had a tiny stain that I was able to carefully lift off with peroxide. I sort of hid it behind the dining room table and my husband never even noticed it for over a year! I have placed it beside the fireplace and it looks great. I regret donating an old iron desk chair but our house is so small that we just do not have room to collect more things. Love your curbside find and will check in to see the latest.
That picture of your curbside find seriously looks like it could be straight out of any of the home tours you post. Your landscaping and the chair itself is perfect!
Antique blanket chests are my weakness. Our new home is smaller though, so I have let three go this year. Sadly, for a small house, my two favorites are very large meaning we can’t schlepp them up and downstairs like we used to.
I started with lamps, then went to mirrors. Currently it’s pictures and chairs. Going to pick up a chair tomorrow. It is an obsession!
I’m right there with Jill (comment above)…fine art for me. If only I had more walls! And I can’t seem to part with any of it because pieces I purchased when younger (I started down this road some 40 years ago!) I still love and enjoy to this day! My color and furniture preferences have evolved over the years, but my love for all the artwork I’ve collected remains steadfast! Eeek!!
Yes, I also have have a chair fetish!
LOL! Love the chairs and ..YES… true finds indeed!! Have fun making them shine!
I recall many years ago out driving through my neighborhood admiring Christmas lights with my daughter and her best friend. All of a sudden I hear “Stop the car” my daughter and her best friend are scooping up this terracotta chiminea left at a neighbors curbside for garbage take out…….they popped the Subaru trunk open so quickly and where they got the muscle to get it shoved in,….. I do not know.
Just goes to show what you can do if you want something really bad enough LOL! …… Like waking up and retrieving that perfect treasure at 5am!! 😉
BTW- the rescued chiminea sits on the dock of a lake house of my daughters best friend parents multimillion $ home with such pride and happiness 🙂
The parents have no clue,…..but we have the memory that $ cannot buy!
Fabulous find! With a little sprucing up and wood glue if needed, it will be a wonderful addition to your house. I am going to look into Facebook Marketplace; seems like a good idea that I have not tried yet!
What is it with the fixation on chairs?! Yup. I have it bad. Love formal, informal, old, indoor, outdoor, so many styles. It’s crazy. But, oh, the personality in a chair. I don’t look for them; they just appear. Sure is fun though, placing it here. No, there. Finally the perfect spot! Simple things like a chair can bring such joy!
