As the new year gently unfolds and the bitterly cold New England winter sets in, there are few things as satisfying to me as productive hibernation. Online classes have become a favorite way to keep curious and inspired, and if you, like me, are wanting to escape reality and enter a world of glamour and beauty and infinite possibilities, online learning platforms such as Create Academy or Masterclass will provide a productive and invaluable escape. I’ve just finished Bunny Williams’s course on Create Academy, How to Design Your Dream Home, and I wanted to share a detailed review of it while my impressions were still fresh.
First and foremost, I have immense admiration for Bunny Williams. She is not only a talented designer, legendary in her field, but she is also a brilliant business woman and, as it turns out, an excellent teacher. She is knowledgable, yes, but she is also a great storyteller and a natural in front of the camera. Her warmth and friendly demeanor hypnotize the viewer. You forget about your surroundings, you let go of decorating fears and you wander alongside Bunny, visiting her Falls Village farmhouse, her New York City apartment and her firm, listening and taking notes, and admiring the beauty of her interiors.
How to Design Your Dream Home is her first (and only) design course and, throughout 5 hours of instruction filmed across several locations, Bunny Williams becomes a familiar, down to earth voice that gently but firmly guides you towards better, more rewarding design choices.
If you’re wandering if this class is for you, this is what I thought. The experienced designer cannot help but feel inspired by her ease, her honesty and vast experience in the field, while at the same time, anyone who wishes to better understand themselves in relation to their home, increase confidence in design decisions and improve the outcome of decorating for fun, will find this class immensely gratifying.
In my opinion, regardless of your decorating leaning – modern, minimalist, traditional, farmhouse, English cottage, etc – there is great value in learning from someone who’s as experienced and as versatile as Bunny Williams.
The class consists of 35 lessons filmed over 5 hours across several locations – we get to visit Bunny Williams at home in Connecticut, at her NYC studio and apartment, and accompany her on several shopping trips around town and country. Touring her Falls Village, Connecticut, farmhouse, we learn all about designing large rooms, creating comfortable and functional spaces, as well as working with open-plan rooms. We learn about the importance of architecture, timeless color palettes and suitability of materials and textiles.
Lessons from her studio include understanding the principles of scheming, detailed suggestions on how to keep track of a project’s progression, documentation, etc. An invaluable class that champions confidence and the importance of self-knowledge while designing your dream home – I give it five stars!
